- Create a "saucer" around the trunk of the tree. This is a place for the water to collect and soak into the roots.
- Keep mulch away from the bark. "Volcano" mulching leads to early tree death. As the mulch decays, the decayed matter introduces bugs and diseases into the bark.
- Use mulch made from wood chips to increase the organic matter of the soil (compost is good, too).
Suckers are those "branches" or new tree "trunks" that grow out of the roots. Get yourself some good lopers and cut them off! They take away from the beauty and strength of the tree.
